He was of the most influential personalities in the transmission of the Strict Observance and German Freemasonry of the 18th century. Originally a laywer from Stuttgart with a passion for politics. He also worked outside of his homeland in Masonic networks. On the recommendation of Landgreve Karl von Hessen-Kassel Danish he was named Chamberlain and Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary of Denmark for Southwest Germany. As such, he exercised extensive diplomatic activity. During the French Revolution as a diplomat in Paris, he was persuaded by Queen Marie Antoinette to initiate relief operations for that wavering royal house.
